Estonian President Alar Karis and Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina back an idea to appoint a special EU envoy for talks with Russia on ending the war in Ukraine, Euronews reports. Speaking in interviews at the World Governments Summit in the UAE, both Karis and Silina said that any communication with Russia should be conducted in consultation with Ukraine. Furthermore, in an interview with NBC, Karis suggested that Ukraine cede territory temporarily to stop the war. Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal and Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna rejected the call for EU talks with Russia. Michal said that Karis’s remarks were ill-advised and clashed with Estonia’s foreign policy and core values, ERR reported. Tsahkna argued that “scraping at the Kremlin’s door would weaken both Ukraine’s and Europe’s positions,” ERR reported. Meanwhile, Estonian party leaders lamented the lack of unity in foreign policy messaging between the president and the government, ERR reported.
