Baltic: Latvia, Lithuania block loopholes in EU sanctions on Russia

Latvia and Lithuania refused to accept a new package of EU sanctions against Russia that would have allowed companies to continue doing business in Russia, BNS reports. Three unnamed EU diplomats told Politico that Latvia and Lithuania blocked a clause that included exceptions allowing EU companies to continue importing and exporting sanctioned goods. The clause was intended to help companies claiming that they were unable to withdraw from Russia. The proposed new sanctions package targets companies and ships circumventing existing EU sanctions on Russian oil and gas. EU foreign ministers are due to resume discussions on the sanctions package on 16 December 2024.
