The defence ministers of the three Baltic States have signed a letter of intent on establishing a Baltic Military Mobility Area, LSM reports. The aim is to standardise border crossing procedures, coordinate the movement of military cargo, and ensure operational information exchange. Furthermore, the Baltic allies will work to align their military movement procedures with other EU and NATO countries. Latvian Defence Minister Andris Spruds told ERR that the mobility area would span the land, sea, air, and cyber domains. Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur said that the ultimate goal was to create a “military Schengen zone” across Europe. Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas vowed that the Baltic States would “never again be anybody’s backyard.” The Baltic States are the “guardians of NATO’s eastern flank” and take the responsibility seriously, he assured.
