Baltic: Presidents call for UN Security Council reform

The presidents of the three Baltic States — Estonia’s Alar Karis, Latvia’s Edgars Rinkevics, and Lithuania’s Gitanas Nauseda — have called for reforming the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), BNS reported. They stressed the need to support Ukraine and hold Russia accountable for its military aggression. Karis pointed to the UNSC’s current inability to resolve conflicts, which he said has undermined the UN’s credibility. Rinkevics insisted that international institutions must become more representative, and Nauseda called for the restoration of the rules-based international order. Nauseda urged the international community to limit Russia’s ability to continue its “colonial war” in Ukraine. “The lack of a multilateral response to Russia’s aggression raised serious doubts about the UN’s ability to maintain peace and security,” he stated. While attending the UN General Assembly in New York, the presidents of the Baltic States and Poland will hold a joint meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
