Russian propagandists, conspiracy theorists, and sensationalist journalists are trying to create confusion and panic by spreading fears about an impending Russian attack against the Baltic States, Estonian anti-disinformation platform Propastop reports. The platform singles out German journalist Julian Röpcke who, in an article for the Bild daily tabloid, suggested that Russia could attack one of the Baltic States in winter 2024/2025. Also, Russian conspiracy theorist Valery Solovey predicted that Russia would launch a “successful hybrid attack” against the Baltic States in autumn 2024. Propastop notes that the aim of these alarmist claims is to divert attention away from Ukraine towards the Baltic States and to test the reactions of Western audiences.
