Estonia: Estonian leaders decry Trump’s tirade against Zelensky

The free world needs a new leader, the EU’s foreign policy chief, Estonia’s former prime minister Kaja Kallas, stated, ERR reports. Reacting to an acrimonious public exchange between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump in the White House on 28 February 2025, Kallas said that it was now up to Europeans to show leadership. She assured that the EU would stand with and increase support to Ukraine. Estonian President Alar Karis, Prime Minister Kristen Michal, and Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna reaffirmed strong support for Ukraine. Meanwhile, Marko Mihkelson, chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the Estonian parliament, the Riigikogu, suggested that the Western alliance could fall apart amid geopolitical realignments, ERR reported. He accused Trump of pressuring Zelensky into capitulating to Russia’s demands. The chairman of Estonia’s main opposition party, Fatherland (Isamaa), former foreign minister Urmas Reinsalu, warned that European inaction and weakening transatlantic ties would embolden Russia, ERR reported.
