Finland’s Helsinki District Court has concluded that it has no jurisdiction in the criminal case over the severing of undersea power and data cables in the Gulf of Finland in December 2024, YLE reported. In the case, the captain and two shipmates of the Eagle S oil tanker were charged with aggravated sabotage, aggravated interference with telecommunications, and lesser offences. The court stated that under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, since the alleged crimes were committed outside Finnish territorial waters, jurisdiction in the case belonged to courts in the vessel’s flag state (Cook Islands) or in the native countries of the defendants (Georgia and India). Furthermore, the court noted that the severing of the Estlink 2 power cable between Finland and Estonia did not result in major negative impact. The Eagle S tanker is said to be part of Russia’s so-called shadow fleet.
