Estonia’s Foreign Ministry lacks the ability to look ahead, President Alar Karis stated, ERR reports. Speaking in an interview with regional daily Lääne Elu, Karis noted that once the war in Ukraine ends, the question will arise whether Estonia still has friends left. Estonia therefore needs “the strength to look a bit further,” he said. However, the Foreign Ministry does not have the “people, skills, and at times even the knowledge” to do that, he asserted. Karis pointed out that the prime minister and the foreign minister were in charge of day-to-day foreign policy decisions, whereas the president’s task was to look further ahead. Karis revealed that he had felt the need to apologise to other heads of state for some of Estonia’s foreign policy decisions. Earlier, the President clashed with Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna over issues related to Ukraine, Russia, and Hungary.
