Estonia: Government may triple immigration quota: minister

The Estonian government may triple the country’s immigration quota, Minister of Economy and Industry Erkki Keldo announced, ERR reports. The current quota amounts to 1,303 people or 0.1% of Estonia’s permanent population per year. Keldo suggested that the quota could be raised to 2,600 people normally and to 3,900 people when annual GDP growth exceeds 2%. Different quotas could be applied to different sectors, and the government could impose minimum wage requirements, the minister said. Education Minister Kristina Kallas, chairperson of the Estonia 200 party, called for the introduction of an immigration quota for highly skilled foreign labour, ERR reported. She suggested that the size of the quota could depend on Estonia’s economic growth and sectors that needed labour. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets, chairman of the Social Democratic Party, opposed raising the immigration quota, while allowing for more exceptions, provided business and trade unions agree.
