Estonia: Government to cut funding for political parties in 2025

The Estonian government plans to cut public funding for political parties by 10% in the 2025 state budget, Prime Minister Kristen Michal announced, ERR reports. Both Michal and Regional Affairs Minister Piret Hartman expect that the reduction will have an impact on party activities. Michal said that right-wing parties, which usually receive more support from private donors, may find it easier to compete with centrist and left-wing parties. Political parties in Estonia will receive altogether around EUR 5.19mn of public support in 2024, of which the ruling Estonian Reform Party will receive EUR 1.9mn. The planned 10% cut would mean that Reform would receive EUR 190,000 less support, while the opposition Conservative People’s Party of Estonia (EKRE) would lose EUR 86,000, the Estonian Centre Party (Keskerakond) EUR 81,000, Estonia 200 around EUR 71,000, the Social Democratic Party (SDE) EUR 46,000, and the opposition Fatherland (Isamaa) EUR 40,000.
