Estonia: Justice Minister opposes banning children from social media

Estonia does not support banning young people from accessing social media, Estonia’s Justice and Digital Affairs Minister, Liisa Pakosta, announced, ERR reports. Earlier, the European Parliament proposed setting an EU-wide age limit on social media platforms. Under the plan, children could use social media from the age of 13 with parental consent and independently from the age of 16. Instead of age limits, the EU should ensure that social media platforms comply with existing EU law, Pakosta insisted. She noted that implementing a mandatory age verification system would require everyone to confirm their identity online. Such a system was easy to bypass, the minister pointed out. Moreover, platforms could begin profiling all users to guess their age, leading to false positives, Pakosta explained.
