Estonia: President appoints new ambassador to NATO

Estonian President Alar Karis has appointed Kristjan Prikk as the country’s new ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), ERR reports. Prikk, who has served as Estonia’s ambassador to the US since 2021, will replace Estonia’s current NATO ambassador, Jüri Luik, as of August 2026. Previously, Prikk served in various defence-related diplomatic posts. He said that NATO’s focus should be on building effective deterrence against Russia, managing the gradual decline in US involvement in European defence, and ensuring NATO’s central role in guaranteeing European security, ERR reports. A new Estonian ambassador to the US has not yet been appointed. Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna noted that the person must gain access to the inner circle of US President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Luik has often been cited as a possible presidential candidate to succeed Karis.
