Estonia: President doubles down on controversial comments on Ukraine

Estonian President Alar Karis assured that Estonia’s foreign policy remained united despite criticism of his comments on the war in Ukraine, ERR reports. Earlier, Karis expressed support for appointing a special EU envoy for peace talks with Russia and suggested that Ukraine cede territory to end the war. Speaking on the sidelines of the opening of the Winter Olympics in Italy, Karis said that the special envoy should be someone acceptable to Europe, the US, and Russia. He noted that territorial issues were always discussed in peace talks. Karis argued that a policy of isolation usually does not work and that Estonia needed to reassess its messaging on the war in Ukraine. At the same time, the President acknowledged that he had not consulted Estonia’s Foreign Ministry on the topic. Responding to Prime Minister Kristen Michal’s and Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna’s criticism of his earlier remarks, Karis urged them to speak to him directly, suggesting that the negative reaction belied a “certain insecurity.”
