Estonia: Pro-Russian politicians sentenced to prison for treason

Estonia’s Harjumaa County Court has found a group of pro-Russian local politicians guilty of treason and activities against Estonia, sentencing them to several years in prison, ERR reports. The court found that Andrei Andronov, Aivo Peterson, and Dmitri Rootsi had undermined Estonia’s constitutional order and independence by taking part in Russia’s influence campaign targeted against Estonia. The three men had established a pro-Russian political party, Together (KOOS), and tried to form an armed civil defence organisation in 2022. The court sentenced Peterson to 14 years and Andronov and Rootsi to 11 years in prison. The three were arrested in March 2023, Postimees reported. The court rulings are subject to appeal. In parliamentary elections in March 2023, Peterson won almost 4,000 votes in Ida-Virumaa county. However, in municipal elections in October 2025, he only got 820 votes in Tallinn.
