Latvia’s Consumer Rights Protection Centre (PTAC) will fine the electronic moped rental company, Ride, for failing to suspend operations as requested, LETA reports. PTAC told Ride to suspend operations after two teenage girls riding the company’s moped died when they were hit by a train in Riga. The consumer rights authority concluded that Ride had failed to provide a safe service. The company has objected to PTAC’s decision, insisting that it was not obliged to ensure strict age verification since its mopeds were classified as “self-propelled bicycles.” Aivis Ozolins, head of the Road Traffic Safety Directorate’s (CSDD) registration department, said that amendments were being prepared to close the legal loophole.
