Latvia: Defence Ministry details spending plans for 2026

Latvia’s Ministry of Defence has announced details on its planned spending under the government’s defence budget in 2026, LSM reports. Latvia will spend a total of EUR 2.158bn on defence in 2026, which will be 4.91% of the estimated annual GDP. Altogether EUR 1.14bn (53%) of the defence budget will go to buy new military hardware for the Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS), including infantry fighting vehicles for EUR 303mn, air defence systems for EUR 200mn, munitions and equipment for EUR 181mn, and indirect fire support for EUR 159mn. Support for Ukraine will amount to EUR 110mn, or 0.25% of GDP. Another EUR 55mn will be spent on reinforcing Latvia’s borders with Russia and Belarus and EUR 50mn on buying drones. Wages for military personnel will amount to EUR 386mn and real estate costs to EUR 184mn.
