Latvia’s Foreign Minister, former prime minister Krisjanis Karins, would like to become a European Commissioner if he fails to win the race for the post of Secretary General of NATO, LETA reports. Latvia’s ruling New Unity party has yet to decide whether to name Karins or Latvia’s current EU commissioner, Valdis Dombrovskis, to top the party’s list of candidates in the upcoming elections to the European Parliament. Karins announced in November 2023 that he was interested in succeeding Norway’s Jens Stoltenberg as the next NATO chief. Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte have expressed their interest in the job as well. Stoltenberg’s extended term in office will end on 1 October 2024.
