Latvia’s Foreign Ministry has repeated its strong recommendation for Latvian citizens not to travel to Belarus and Russia due to the current tense security situation, LSM reports. The ministry warned that travellers may be subjected to provocations. Diana Eglite, press secretary at the Foreign Ministry, urged people to assess risks. In June 2022, a Latvian citizen was detained in Belarus after police found text messages critical of Alyaksandr Lukashenka, the self-proclaimed president of Belarus, on his phone, The Baltic Times reports. The man was then placed in a psychiatric clinic and denied any visitors. Nevertheless, buses are still running regularly from Riga to Belarus and Russia, and most trips are sold out. Larisa Kolesnikova, board chairwoman of Fortuna Travel, said that most of the travellers are senior citizens visiting relatives.
