Latvia: Gender equality worsened sharply in 2025: report

Gender equality in Latvia worsened sharply in 2025, according to the European Institute for Gender Equality’s (EIGE) Gender Equality Index, LETA reports. Latvia ranked 24th out of 27 EU member states on the index in 2025, which was down from 19th place in 2024. Latvia scored 56.7 points on gender equality, which was down from 62.6 points a year earlier. The EU average was 63.4 points out pf 100 points in 2025. Latvia’s gender gap in the labour market is lower than the EU average. At the same time, income inequality among cohabiting couples has increased. Latvia ranks last in the EU in terms of the gender gap in education. Meanwhile, 46% of women and 53% of men in Latvia rate their health as good or very good, EIGE’s report recorded.
