Latvia: Government assessing removal of railway tracks to Russia

Latvia must be fully ready to dismantle railway tracks going to Russia if necessary, Foreign Minister Baiba Braze stated, LSM reports. However, she said that it would make no sense for Latvia to do so unilaterally. Latvia will coordinate the issue with Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, and Finland. Earlier, the presidents of the three Baltic States stressed also that any decision should be made jointly, LETA reported. The Latvian government will assess the possible removal of railway tracks on the eastern border by the end of 2025, LSM reports. The issue was discussed in the parliamentary subcommittee on internal security as well, LETA reported. Colonel Andris Rieksts of the Joint HQ of the Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) pointed out that a railway line that does not exist cannot be used by the enemy. Meanwhile, a Foreign Ministry official pointed to the importance of transport links with Central Asia.
