Latvia: New traffic rules for pedestrians, cyclists, e-scooter drivers

The Latvian government is discussing proposed changes to traffic rules for pedestrians, cyclists, and electric scooter drivers, LETA reports. Under the changes, two pedestrians will be allowed to walk side by side along the edge of low-speed roads with no pavement. Roller skating, skateboarding, and use of other similar equipment will only be allowed without disturbing pedestrians, including in residential areas. Moreover, the proposed amendments clarify the definition of bicycle lanes and ensure priority for cyclists and e-scooter drivers in residential areas. As of 1 January 2024, e-scooter drivers will have to wear protective helmets. Also, the maximum speed of e-scooters will be limited to 25 kmph.
