Latvia: Over 4,600 Russians need to pass language exam to stay

Latvia’s Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) will inform altogether 4,650 Russian citizens on steps they need to take to be able to stay in Latvia after changes to the country’s law on immigration, LETA reports. Russian nationals with permanent residence permits must apply for the status of a permanent EU resident and pass a Latvian language exam by 30 June 2025. Their current residence permits will expire on 15 July 2025. Those who fail to submit an application will have to leave Latvia by 13 October 2025. Those who fail the state language test have until 31 October 2025 to pass a repeat exam. Persons aged 75 years or older and those with health impediments will not have to take the exam. So far, 2,000 Russian citizens with permanent residence permits have left Latvia voluntarily, LSM reports.
