The Latvian parliament, the Saeima, has approved in final reading the state budget for 2026, LSM reports. Altogether 52 MPs voted for and 42 against the budget bill. This is the current coalition government’s third budget. The government foresees annual revenues of EUR 16.1bn, which would be EUR 944.6mn more than in 2025. Budget expenditures are planned at EUR 17.9bn, which would be EUR 804.3mn higher. The budget deficit is planned at 3.3% of GDP, up from 2.9% in 2025. Defence spending will be the largest in Latvian history, amounting to EUR 2.16bn, which is more than 12% of the total state budget and 4.91% of GDP, LETA reports. Additional budget spending on defence and internal security will amount to EUR 448.3mn, on support for families with children to EUR 94.8mn, and on salaries for school teachers and support staff to EUR 45mn, LETA reports.
