Latvia: Parliament bans Belarusian cars as of November 2024

The Latvian parliament, the Saeima, has passed in final reading amendments that ban vehicles registered in Belarus from Latvia, LETA reports. 77 MPs voted in favour of the amendments, while 9 voted against, LSM reported. Under the legislation, Belarusian vehicles need to be reregistered in Latvia or taken out of the country by 31 October 2024. Belarusian vehicles can then only enter Latvia for transit with prior permission from the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD). Exceptions apply for humanitarian reasons, for national security, and for diplomatic and consular traffic. Vehicles failing to comply with the new rules risk being confiscated and donated to Ukraine. There is currently no data on the number of Belarusian-registered vehicles in Latvia.
