Latvia: PM pushes Baltics to invest in airBaltic

The Latvian government has again suggested that all three Baltic States invest in Latvia’s national airline, airBaltic, ERR reports. Prime Minister Evika Silina argued that the Baltic countries should work together to “coordinate aviation” in the region. She intends to discuss the issue with her Estonian and Lithuanian counterparts. Earlier, the Estonian government rejected Latvia’s proposal to invest in airBaltic, while Lithuanian ministers said that the issue was not on their government’s agenda. Meanwhile, the Latvian parliament’s budget and finance committee failed to approve the government’s proposal for a short-term loan of EUR 30mn to airBaltic because of opposition from the ruling coalition’s Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS), LETA reports. The airline has suspended its planned IPO. Andrejs Martinovs, chairman of airBaltic’s supervisory board, said that the company was still seeking private investors, while existing shareholders might invest more capital as well.
