The Latvian government has approved amendments to the law on electronic communications that would allow police and border guards to use signal jammers to combat illegal drones, LSM reports. If approved in parliament, the amendments would allow the State Police and the State Border Guard (VRS) to use special radio equipment to interrupt unwanted radio communications in emergency and urgent situations where public safety or critical infrastructure is threatened. Currently, only national security authorities and the Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) have such powers. Since 2022, authorities have registered over 2,100 offences related to the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, of which around 10% were deemed very serious.
