Latvia: Road freight up, rail, sea freight down in H1/2024: statistics

The volume of freight carried by road increased in Latvia, while the volume of rail, sea, and air freight decreased in the first half of 2024, according to the Central Statistical Bureau (CSP), LSM reports. Freight carried by land transport totalled 40.9mn tonnes in six months, which was 2.0% less than a year earlier. Road freight totalled 35.0mn tonnes, which was up 2.8% on year. Domestic freight amounted to 26.9mn tonnes (up 1.8%) and international freight to 8.1mn tonnes (up 6.6%) of the total volume of road freight. Meanwhile, the volume of rail freight amounted to 5.9mn tonnes, which was 23.3% less than in the first half of 2023. Rail freight in international traffic totalled 5.1mn tonnes, which was down 26.4% on year. Latvian ports handled a total of 17.9mn tonnes of cargo in the first half of 2024, which was 11.4% less than a year earlier. Riga International Airport handled 8,400 tonnes of cargo, which was down 10.1% on year.
