Latvia: Russia border fence to be completed by end of 2025

Latvia’s state real estate management company, Valsts Nekustamie Ipasumi (VNI), plans to complete the construction of a fence along the full stretch of the country’s border with Russia by the end of 2025, LSM reports. Only around 6 kilometres of the fence remains to be built in areas of difficult terrain along the border. VNI finished building around 250 kilometres of the fence in priority sections of the border at the end of 2024. The total length of the Latvian-Russian border is 283.6 kilometres. VNI completed the construction of a 145-kilometre fence on Latvia’s border with Belarus in July 2024, LETA reported. Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis said that full infrastructure, including bridges and surveillance systems, along Latvia’s eastern border should be completed by the end of 2026.
