Latvia: Russian drone crashes in eastern Latvia

A Russian military drone crashed in Latvia’s Rezekne municipality on 7 September 2024, the Ministry of Defence announced, LETA reports. The unmanned aerial vehicle flew from neighbouring Belarus. The Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) detected the arrival of the drone into Latvian airspace, monitored its movement, and determined the location of its fall. Initial information suggested that the drone flew into Latvia accidentally. NBS is now investigating the wreckage. Defence Minister Andris Spruds said that the incident confirmed the need to strengthen the protection of Latvia’s eastern border with air defence and electronic warfare capabilities. Foreign Minister Baiba Braze said that a representative of the Russian embassy was summoned over the incident. A similar incident occurred later in Romania.
