Latvia: Thousands of Latvians register support for Istanbul Convention

Over 7,700 people in Latvia have signed a public petition against withdrawing from the Council of Europe’s Istanbul Convention on violence against women and domestic violence, LSM reports. Earlier, several parties in the Latvian parliament, the Saeima, signalled that they might vote to revoke Latvia’s ratification of the human rights treaty. The Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS), which is part of the current coalition government, voted in favour of ratification two years ago but has since concluded that their previous vote was a mistake, political scientist Filips Rajevskis told Baltic News Network. The other two coalition parties, New Unity and the Progressives, are adamantly against Latvia leaving the convention. Hundreds of people protested against exiting the treaty outside the parliament on 2 October 2025, and a new demonstration is planned for 8 October 2025.
