Canada’s first ambassador to Lithuania, Jeanette Sautner, has taken office on 10 July 2023 after presenting her diplomatic credentials to President Gitanas Nauseda, BNS reports. Nauseda said that the opening of the Canadian embassy in Vilnius would open new opportunities to further strengthen bilateral relations. He thanked Canada for its contribution to strengthening the security of the Baltic region by leading the NATO enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) force in Latvia and sending troops to the NATO Force Integration Unit (NFIU) in Lithuania. Also, Nauseda expressed appreciation for Canada’s support for Ukraine and commended Canada’s decision to use seized Russian assets to help rebuild Ukraine. Until now, Canada’s only embassy in the Baltic States was in the Latvian capital, Riga, with offices in Tallinn and Vilnius.
