Lithuania: Coalition rift over defence project vote

Lithuania’s opposition Union of Democrats for Lithuania (DSVL) may rejoin the government, ELTA reports. DSVL chairman, MP Saulius Skvernelis, neither confirmed nor denied potential coalition talks. Earlier, President Gitanas Nauseda urged the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP) to make changes to the ruling coalition. This was after ten MPs, all of whom represent coalition parties, voted against the establishment of a new military training area in Kapciamiestis near the border with Poland and Belarus, BNS reported. Seven of the opposing MPs were from the far-right Dawn of Nemunas (PPNA) and three from the joint parliamentary group of the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union (LVZS) and the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania (LLRA). PPNA leader Remigijus Zemaitaitis said that he would continue to vote against the Kapciamiestis project, BNS reported. LSDP has called a meeting of the coalition council to discuss the situation. Meanwhile, Jaroslav Narkevic, parliamentary group chairman of LVZS, insisted that there was no reason to discuss changes to the coalition.
