Lithuania: Cultural sector readying for nationwide protests

Cultural activists in Lithuania are preparing for a nationwide “warning strike” on 5 October 2025 to protest against control of the Ministry of Culture by the far-right populist party, Dawn of Nemunas (PPNA), LRT reports. Earlier, protests across the country contributed to the hasty resignation of PPNA’s newly-appointed Culture Minister, Ignotas Adomavicius. Cultural leaders fear that PPNA’s leadership of the Ministry of Culture threatens efforts to combat disinformation, safeguard freedom of speech, and uphold democratic values, BNS reports. Furthermore, some NGOs have distanced themselves from President Gitanas Nauseda who approved the nomination of PPNA’s candidate for the ministerial post, LRT reported. Judita Akromiene, director of the National Network of Education NGOs (Svietimo Tinklas), warned that Lithuania could be on a “direct course towards the Hungarian way” and a weakening of democracy.
