Lithuania: Culture Minister resigns amid backlash

Lithuania’s new Minister of Culture, Ignotas Adomavicius, resigned on 3 October 2025 after just one week in office, LRT reported. Adomavicius, a member of the far-right populist party, Dawn of Nemunas, said that he resigned “so as not to disrupt the government’s work.” Earlier, in an interview with Lietuvos Rytas, Adomavicius evaded questions on Lithuania’s support for Ukraine and the status of Russian-occupied Crimea, insisting that the questions were “provocative.” Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene called the minister’s utterances “completely unacceptable” and announced that she was ready to dismiss Adomavicius, BNS reported. However, she said that the Dawn of Nemunas could still nominate another person to the ministerial post. The appointment of Adomavicius sparked mass protests of cultural workers across Lithuania.
