Lithuania: Dawn of Nemunas leader wants to abolish Constitutional Court

The leader of Lithuania’s far-right populist Dawn of Nemunas party, MP Remigijus Zemaitaitis, has called for abolishing the country’s Constitutional Court, ELTA reports. He insisted that the court had become a “politicised institution” and suggested that its functions be taken over by the Supreme Court instead. In 2024, the Constitutional Court ruled that Zemaitaitis had violated the Constitution and breached his oath as MP by making antisemitic statements. MPs from both coalition and opposition parties rejected the idea of disbanding the court, Lietuvos Rytas reported. However, several MPs argued that active politicians should not be appointed to the court, LRT reported. The ruling coalition has proposed that MP Julius Sabatauskas of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP) be nominated as a candidate to the Constitutional Court.
