A group of MPs in Lithuania has established a parliamentary working group to push for the restoration of full diplomatic relations with communist China, ELTA reports. The working group’s chairman, MP Ignas Vegele of the opposition Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union (LVZS), called on Lithuania to bring its diplomatic ties with China in line with most EU countries. He stressed the need to reestablish economic ties with China, arguing that the previous government’s “values-based” foreign policy had been detrimental and had hindered trade relations. The working group includes MPs from both coalition and opposition parties, BNS reports. China downgraded its diplomatic ties with Lithuania after the opening of a Taiwanese Representative Office in Vilnius in 2021.
