The chairman of Lithuania’s ruling Homeland Union (TS-LKD), Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, has called for talks with the opposition Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP) over fears about the surge in support for the new far-right party, Dawn of Nemunas, ELTA reports. Speaking in an interview with Ziniu Radijas, Landsbergis warned that the Dawn of Nemunas could change the direction of Lithuania’s policies away from the West. Homeland Union’s coalition partners, the Freedom Party and the Lithuanian Liberal Movement (LLS), have also pledged not to work with the Dawn of Nemunas. Meanwhile, LSDP chairwoman, MEP Vilija Blinkeviciute said that it was “hard to imagine” a coalition with the Dawn of Nemunas today, ELTA reported. Speaking on Ziniu Radijas, Blinkeviciute urged the leader of the Dawn of Nemumas, former MP Remigijus Zemaitaitis, to “choose his words responsibly.” Zemaitaitis resigned from the Lithuanian parliament, the Seimas, before being impeached for his antisemitic statements. The populist politician is increasingly popular in Lithuania’s rural regions, LRT reports.
