Lithuania: Lithuanian MEP funds alternative news website

The Lithuanian MEP, Viktor Uspaskich, and his former wife, Jolanta Blazyte, are funding a new social media platform and alternative news website, 77.lt, LRT reports. The website, which was launched in April 2023, has attracted users who spread fake news about the coronavirus pandemic, vaccines, and the war in Ukraine. The network operates as part of the Cross.social project, which is owned by the Marshall Islands-based offshore company, Multiverse. Almost all of the companies and executives listed as part of the Cross.social community are from Lithuania. Over two years, legal entities managed by Uspaskich and Blazyte have donated close to EUR 200,000 to an NGO, Petys i Peti (Shoulder to Shoulder), that collects funds for 77.lt. Uspaskich founded the Labour Party and remains its honorary chairman.
