Lithuania: New laws to control fuel prices

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has proposed a draft law that would allow the government to set maximum consumer prices on petrol and diesel fuel by decree, ELTA reports. Under the law, the Energy Ministry would calculate and proclaim the daily fuel price cap under a specific formula. Retailers failing to comply with the price cap could be fined or have their license suspended or revoked. Nauseda insisted that the price control mechanism would be compatible with the market economy, BNS reported. He has asked that the parliament consider the draft law urgently. Meanwhile, Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas will sign a decree obligating filling stations to provide daily information about fuel prices to the Lithuanian Energy Agency, ELTA reports. Also, the Energy Ministry has proposed prohibiting petrol stations from raising prices more often than once per day. In the meantime, the government has approved a proposal to lower the excise duty on diesel fuel until 15 June 2026, BNS reports.
