Lithuania: Officials signalling thaw with Belarus

Lithuanian officials have been making public statements recently suggesting a possible rapprochement in relations with neighbouring Belarus, only to retract their remarks afterwards, LRT reports. Observers say that the comments may be an attempt to test whether Lithuanian public opinion on Belarus is changing. Officials have suggested opening talks with Belarus and easing sanctions imposed on Belarus. Earlier, the US lifted sanctions on the Belarusian state-owned potash fertiliser producer, Belaruskali, which used to export its products through Lithuania’s port of Klaipeda. Belarusian opposition leader Marya Kalesnikava has met with several political leaders in Lithuania, BNS reported. Apparently, she has urged to reopen transport links, remove sanctions, and open talks with the Belarusian regime. However, following her meeting with Kalesnikava, Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene said that relations with Belarus were unlikely to improve soon, BNS reported.
