Lithuania: Opposition urges LSDP to reject coalition with far right

The Lithuanian parliament, the Seimas, must impeach MP Remigijus Zemaitaitis, leader of the far-right Dawn of Nemunas (PPNA) party, if an appeals court upholds a lower court ruling finding him guilty of antisemitic hate speech, opposition leaders stated, Lietuvos Rytas reports. Saulius Skvernelis, chairman of the Union of Democrats for Lithuania (DSVL), and Viktorija Cmilyte-Nielsen, chairwoman of the Lithuanian Liberal Movement (LLS), argued that the parliament would have to impeach Zemaitaitis if the appeals court found him guilty. Both Skvernelis and Cmilyte-Nielsen as well as Laurynas Kasciunas, chairman of the main opposition party, Homeland Union, urged the ruling Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP) to reject its coalition with PPNA. Cmilyte-Nielsen called LSDP’s failure to do so a “disgrace” to Lithuanian parliamentarianism. Meanwhile, Zemaitaitis insisted that the future of PPNA’s coalition with LSDP could only be discussed after the verdict of the appeals court, ELTA reported.
