Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene criticised the previous government’s decision to allow Taiwan to open a de facto embassy in Vilnius, BNS reports. She said that Lithuania “jumped in front of the train and lost” when it allowed Taiwan to open the representative office without coordinating the move with the EU and the US. Ruginiene noted that Taiwan’s representative offices in other European countries were opened under the name “Taipei Representative Office,” allowing those countries to maintain “completely businesslike” relations with communist China. By contrast, “no one appreciated” Lithuania allowing Taiwan to open the representative office using the name “Taiwanese Representative Office,” the Prime Minister insisted. She said that her government was now taking “the first small steps” towards normalising relations with China and was coordinating its actions with the EU and the US.
