Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda called for limiting the number of immigrants entering the country, BNS reports. Speaking on LRT, Nauseda argued that “uncontrolled immigration was, first and foremost, a national security issue.” Given the “demographic hole” that Lithuania faces, failure to control immigration could lead to “outcomes none of us want,” Nauseda stated. He insisted that the number of immigrants had reached a “critically high level” relative to Lithuania’s total population, noting that the issue could have an impact on election results. Nauseda said that he would support the introduction of a “strict quota system” for third-country nationals. He suggested that the quota could number around 40,000 work immigrants.
