US presence in Europe and the Baltic region is the best deterrent against Russia, contributing to stability in the whole region, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda stated, BNS reports. Speaking at the European Political Community summit in the UK, Nauseda said that if former US president Donald Trump won the US presidential elections in November 2024, he would seek to convince the new US administration to maintain the transatlantic bond. Lithuania’s ambassador to the US, Audra Plepyte, said that relations with the US would “inevitably change” if Trump was elected, but stressed the strategic imperative of good relations, LRT reported. Meanwhile, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said that Trump’s selection of Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate meant entering a “territory of uncertainty,” BNS reported. Vance has stated his reservations about continued support for Ukraine.
