Lithuania: President pushes EU to extend sanctions on Belarus

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda pledged to push for the EU to extend sanctions imposed against Belarus, BNS reports. He pointed to the Belarusian regime’s continued alignment with Russia, repression of political opponents, and repeated hybrid attacks against Lithuania. EU defence commissioner Andrius Kubilius agreed that there was no reason for the EU to remove the sanctions, Lietuvos Rytas reported. Earlier, the US eased sanctions on Belarusian potash fertilisers. Both Nauseda and Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene assured that the US had not made any request to ease sanctions and resume transit shipments of Belarusian fertilisers, BNS reported. Moreover, Nauseda urged not to speculate on possible negotiations with Belarus. Earlier, MP Remigijus Motuzas, chairman of the Lithuanian parliament’s foreign affairs committee, announced that discussions were underway on possible talks with Belarus, BNS reported. Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys insisted that negotiations with the Belarusian regime were not under consideration, however.
