Lithuania: Thousands rally to defend public broadcaster

Thousands of people gathered outside the Lithuanian parliament, the Seimas, on 9 December 2025 to protest against planned changes to the management of the country’s public broadcaster, Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT), BNS reports. Location data from mobile operators showed that around 40,000 people took part in the demonstration, DELFI reported. The protesters accused the government of trying to take control of LRT. The parliament is considering amendments that would make it easier to dismiss the LRT director, which journalist organisations insist would be unconstitutional. The parliament’s committee on culture will ask for a review of the amendments by legal experts, BNS reports. Earlier, the parliament froze LRT’s budget for three years. Meanwhile, a petition initiated by the Lithuanian Association of Professional Journalists (ZPA) in support of LRT’s independence has been signed by nearly 140,000 people, LSM reports.
