Türkiye’s application to join the BRICS group undermines trust in the country, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis stated, BNS reports. He pointed to questions on how to reconcile positions within NATO between countries that support Ukraine and those that are pro-Russian. “All this undermines trust,” he added. Meanwhile, Asta Skaisgiryte, chief foreign policy adviser to Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, noted that BRICS was not really an organisation, but rather a group of countries. She said that Türkiye’s bid to join the group showed that it wanted to be a “regional geopolitical player.” Earlier, Bloomberg reported that Türkiye applied to join BRICS some months ago amid frustration over lack of progress in its bid to join the EU.
