Lithuania: Vilnius Airport reopens after another balloon attack

Lithuania has lifted flight restrictions after disruptions caused by smuggler balloons from neighbouring Belarus, BNS reports. Saulius Batavicius, CEO of air navigation provider Oro Navigacija, said that around 60 balloons were detected during the shutdown, practically blocking access to Vilnius International Airport. The airport was shut down for almost 11 hours. Batavicius noted that the balloons were being sent “very precisely” into sensitive areas and at continuous intervals, LRT reported. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys discussed the situation with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, accusing Belarus of deliberately targeting Vilnius Airport, ELTA reported. Budrys demanded that the EU take concrete action to protect its citizens. The EU cannot “silently observe and tolerate” how the Belarusian regime “indiscriminately terrorises an EU member state,” he insisted.
