Estonia: EstLink 2 outage to raise electricity prices

The malfunction of the EstLink 2 power cable between Estonia and Finland is likely to raise electricity prices in Estonia, according to energy experts, ERR reports. However, Jaanus Uiga, deputy secretary general at the Ministry of Climate, said that, owing to an increase in renewable energy capacity, the price difference between Estonia and Finland could be smaller than during the previous EstLink 2 outage in 2024. Meanwhile, energy entrepreneur Sandor Liive does not think that renewable energy can fully replace EstLink 2’s capacity. He pointed to estimates that the outage could cost an additional EUR 100mn to the Estonian economy. Nevertheless, both Uiga and Liive assured that Estonia’s energy security remained intact.
