Estonia’s Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas, should have resigned over a scandal involving her husband’s business ties with Russia, President Alar Karis stated, ERR reports. Speaking after a meeting with the leaders of parliamentary parties, Karis said that he would personally have preferred to see Kallas resign for the sake of the government’s effectiveness and Estonia’s credibility. Kallas appeared at a public hearing of the anti-corruption select committee of the Estonian parliament, the Riigikogu, on 4 September 2023 to discuss the scandal. Kallas insisted that she be treated equally to everyone else. She went on to have a heated exchange with committee chairman Mart Helme of the opposition Conservative People’s Party of Estonia (EKRE).
